Western science is beginning to corroborate what many cultures understood 5000 years ago. The ancients gave us prescriptions for maintaining optimal mental health: mindfulness, meditation, imagery, yoga, breathing practices, sound, self inquiry, body sensing and affirmations that arise from our authentic experience of self. We will review current research that shows the evidence-based aspects of using these practices for self care and teaching them to clients.
We'll immerse ourselves in these practices in a safe environment where we can assess their affect and know them fully. Practicing these tools for self-care will have the side effect of helping you to bring them back to your work settings. You will discover for yourself the physiological changes occurring in the body during practices that produce an immediate "feel good" effect, and experience the shift in your own outlook as we practice simple exercises that can change your life. Thus we can discern what we will bring back to our lives and what to particular clients.
You'll learn strategies to help clients focus, relax, have greater access to feeling states and impact their thoughts and moods in positive ways, reducing emotional reactivity. These practices can provide an alternative or adjunct treatment for clients have received only so much relief from cognitive restructuring and other therapeutic strategies or who are averse to/not responding to medication.
This workshop is designed for all level of mental health practitioners, regardless of your experience with these practices. There will be options provided for those who may not want to try all of the offerings. Every day will include easy and accessible movement, yogic breathing, and meditation or guided relaxation. Along with didactic components and practice, the format will include sharing in dyads and small groups. Wear comfortable clothing.
